With
9,000 residents, the Fairfax neighborhood encompasses three
of Cleveland's best-known institutions. The Cleveland Clinic
is the city's largest employer. The Cleveland Play House's
cultural events are enjoyed by people throughout the region,
and the Karamu House-a highly recognized theater and arts
center-completes the cultural offerings of the neighborhood.
Between
1950 and 1980, the population of Fairfax declined from over
39,000 to less than 13,000. By 1990, household incomes and
housing values had fallen to less than half of the citywide
average. Private development is helping the neighborhood make
a dramatic comeback. Almost 150 single-family homes and townhouses
have been built or are under construction. Many of these homes
are in the neighborhood's Bicentennial Village development.
