Sharing the conviction that social justice, linked with proven business principles, can enhance a community, Milton Davis, James Fletcher, Ronald Grzywinski, and Mary Houghton bought South Shore Bank on Chicago's South Side in 1973. Their innovative enterprise became the nation's first community development bank.

Beginning in the late 1980s, Shorebank began to replicate its unique banking approach which was built on traditional banking services complemented with customized business services, entrepreneurial assistance, and neighborhood revitalization programs. Shorebank now operates in Cleveland, Detroit, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the Pacific Northwest.

In addition, Shorebank Capital Corporation is a minority venture capital fund that serves companies throughout the country.
